Why Link Harvester was Made:
There are many text link analysis programs on the market. They do a good job at analyzing what data they can get at, but they are limited by only seeing the first 1,000 search results.
This tool:
- allows you to see deeper than other link analysis tools.
- operates quicker than any other link analysis tool on the market
- uses the Yahoo! API, so you shouldn't have to worry about violating the seach engine terms of services and it getting blocked.
Useful Tool Features:
- quickly find almost every single site linking into a domain or page.
- scrapes past the 1,000 search result limit by making domain filtering a snap.
- grabs number of pages indexed.
- grabs links to any page.
- grabs total inbound links, home page links, and deep link ratio.
- tool is fast and free. which is great considering all it does.
- grabs C block IP address information.
- tool provides links to Wayback Machine and WhoIs Source next to each domain.
- free & open source. grab the source code here (requires DOM XML support to run)
- uses the Yahoo! API so it complies with their TOS.
Things that Could be Better:
- there are a few features that might make the tool a bit better, but the tool does not scrape pages to gather link text as each additional function makes the tool slower. The goal of the tool was to be fast, so it does not spider pages.
- I think the Yahoo! API numbers for backlinks might be a bit off. also the tool only uses 1 engine for linkage data, but generally Yahoo! shows way more data than other engines.
- currently the tool sorts out .edu, .ac.uk, and .gov backlinks. a feature may eventually be added to allow users to add other domain extensions they would like to filter out.
