There are also a few more creative use techniques, like:
- pairing up one legit resource with a few not so legit ones to see if they are creating hub pages
- looking for on theme links pointing at sites which changed owner or purpose and reminding people to update their pages (while conveniently asking them to add your link and a few others to their page)
- etc
Why Hub Finder Was Made:
Pages which link to similar resources may be authorities on that topic. That means that some of these pages may be more inclined to be receptive to link requests and their links may have a greater implied value.
Renting links from off topic sites made it too easy for a powerful site in one industry to manipulate search results in an unrelated industry. By looking at the web as communities instead of just looking at the web on the whole search engines can improve their search relevancy. More information about Hub Finder.
Many of the major search engines have various algorithms which look at communities:
- Topic Specific PageRank (PDF) - converts search queries into their topical ideas. Speeds up the computation of PageRank by allowing a more rough estimation to be used by placing an additional topic biased layer on top of it. Most of TSPR calculations are
- Hilltop - looks for relationships between resources. Algorithm may boost the effectiveness of authority links from non affiliated pages and discount links which are viewed as nepotistic or controlled by a common owner.
- Topic Distillation (PDF) - background on topic distillation. Teoma calculates most of their connectivity scores in real time.
Useful Tool Features:
- quickly find topical hub pages
- find out how many related resources hub pages are linking at
- uses the Yahoo! API so it complies with their TOS.
Things that Could be Better:
- there are many scraper websites in some fields. In those fields those results can clutter up the Hub Finder output.
- I also listed some of the suggested possible upgrades when I launched this tool. If you would like to make it better you can. Here is the source code.
